Moving house is exciting, but it can also highlight one of the biggest hidden challenges during a move – flat pack furniture.
Whether it’s an IKEA wardrobe, chest of drawers, shelving or furniture from another manufacturer, flat pack items are designed to be assembled once, not repeatedly dismantled and rebuilt.
At VCB Removals, we move flat pack furniture every week. One of the most common questions we receive is:
“Can you dismantle and reassemble my furniture?”
The answer is yes—we can help—but there are important things every customer should understand before deciding whether to dismantle existing furniture or replace it altogether.
Why Flat Pack Furniture Can Be Difficult to Move
Unlike traditional solid wood furniture, flat pack furniture is manufactured using engineered boards such as MDF or particleboard.
These materials are strong enough when assembled correctly but rely heavily on:
- Cam locks
- Wooden dowels
- Screws
- Glue
- Compression between panels
Every time the furniture is dismantled, these fixings become weaker.
The holes can enlarge.
The dowels become loose.
The boards can chip.
The screw fixings lose grip.
Eventually, the furniture may never feel as solid as it originally did. Even without moving and dissassembling, overtime the particleboards can degrade and the same effect happens.
This is why many manufacturers actually advise against repeated dismantling and reassembly.
Why Removals Insurance Usually Doesn’t Cover Flat Pack Furniture
One of the biggest misconceptions is that removals insurance covers every item regardless of its condition. Unfortunately, that isn’t usually the case. Most removals insurance policies specifically exclude, or significantly limit, claims relating to flat pack furniture that is dismantled and reassembled.
The reason is simple. If an item fails several weeks after the move, it is almost impossible to determine whether it failed because of:
- age
- previous wear
- manufacturing quality
- previous dismantling
- hidden damage
- issues with original construction
- or the latest assembly.
Unlike a solid oak wardrobe, flat pack furniture often cannot be restored once its structural strength has reduced.
Because of this uncertainty, many removal companies include exclusions for:
- IKEA furniture
- MDF furniture
- particleboard furniture
- self-assembly furniture
- flat pack wardrobes
- similar types of modular furniture
Always read your removals company’s Terms & Conditions carefully.
Why Removal Companies Cannot Guarantee Reassembly
Even when a professional removal company dismantles your furniture, no reputable company should guarantee that the furniture will be exactly as strong afterwards.
This isn’t because the team lacks experience. It’s because the furniture itself changes every time it is dismantled.
For example:
- Screw holes gradually enlarge.
- Cam lock fixings wear.
- Wooden dowels loosen.
- MDF begins to crumble around fixings.
- Hidden stress cracks can appear.
Even if everything is rebuilt perfectly, the furniture may not regain its original rigidity.
Should You Move It or Buy New?
Sometimes replacing furniture is actually the cheaper option.
Ask yourself these questions.
How old is it?
If it’s already 8–10 years old, it may be nearing the end of its useful life.
Was it inexpensive?
A £120 wardrobe may not justify several hours of dismantling and rebuilding.
Is it showing signs of wear?
Loose joints today often become broken panels tomorrow.
Will it suit your new home?
Many customers move into homes with different room sizes or layouts.
It can be a perfect opportunity to upgrade furniture that no longer fits your needs.
When It Makes Sense to Move Flatpack Furniture
On the other hand, there are many occasions where moving existing furniture makes perfect sense.
For example:
- Nearly new furniture
- High-quality flat pack furniture
- Large fitted wardrobes
- Furniture that matches other pieces
- Furniture that would be expensive to replace
- Items with sentimental value
In these situations, careful dismantling and professional transport are usually worthwhile.
Our Recommended Approach
At VCB Removals, our preferred recommendation is simple.
Where practical, we recommend that customers dismantle and reassemble their own flat pack furniture.
Why?
Because you know:
- how it was originally assembled
- where replacement fixings may already have been used
- any previous repairs
- areas that are already weak
Many customers also prefer taking responsibility for furniture they know may already have structural wear.
Of course, we understand this isn’t always practical.
Can We Dismantle and Reassemble Furniture?
Yes.
We regularly help customers dismantle and reassemble:
- wardrobes
- beds
- dining tables
- desks
- shelving units
- TV units
- office furniture
We’ll always take every reasonable care however, it’s important to understand that even when we carry out the work no responsible removal company can honestly guarantee the future structural integrity of flat pack furniture.
Step-by-Step Guide to Moving Flat Pack Furniture Yourself
If you’d prefer to dismantle furniture yourself before moving day, here’s our recommended process.
Step 1 – Empty everything
Remove:
- clothing
- books
- drawers
- shelves
- ornaments
Furniture should always be completely empty before moving.
Step 2 – Take photographs
Photograph the furniture from every angle before dismantling.
Take close-up pictures of hinges, runners and fixings.
These photographs make reassembly much easier.
Step 3 – Label every part
Masking tape works brilliantly and can save hours later.
Label:
- left side
- right side
- top
- base
- shelves
- doors
Step 4 – Store screws safely
Place each set of fixings into a separate labelled bag. Tape the bag securely to one of the panels.
Never leave loose screws in moving boxes.
Step 5 – Protect every panel
Wrap larger panels using:
- furniture blankets
- bubble wrap
- cardboard corner protectors
Flat pack furniture chips very easily.
Step 6 – Transport carefully
Keep long panels upright where possible. Avoid placing heavy items on top of MDF panels.
Step 7 – Reassemble carefully
Avoid overtightening screws. If a fixing feels loose, don’t simply tighten harder.
Overtightening usually damages MDF even further. If necessary, use appropriate replacement fittings.
Common Questions
Can IKEA furniture be moved?
Yes.
Many IKEA items can be moved successfully. However, repeated dismantling may weaken certain products, particularly older wardrobes and larger units.
Can wardrobes be moved fully assembled?
Sometimes.
It depends on:
- access
- staircases
- door widths
- weight
- construction
During a home survey, we can advise whether dismantling is necessary.
Can furniture stay full of clothes?
Usually not.
Most wardrobes become far too heavy to move safely once loaded. Removing contents also reduces stress on the frame.
Some furniture pieces like small drawers and units can potentially stay full, especially if they are not overfilled. Solid pieces of furniture are usually ok to have things in drawers providing they are not fragile and do not weigh too much.
Drawers can usually be taken out of the frames and moved separately if needed.
Is dismantling included in the moving price?
Not always.
Many removal companies treat dismantling and reassembly as an additional service because it adds significant time and labour to the move. Always check your quotation carefully to understand what is included.
